Pony Stories

Two RETNS pupils have been learning great new skills  at home over the past two months  Read all about their pony-riding adventures. Sounds like hard work but very exciting too! Mary G

My pony’s name is Apericorn. She is a black pony with a beautiful tail and mane. Her breed is a Dale. She is 14 hand and 2 inches. There are 4 inches in a hand. She is only 20 years old.

I groom her before I ride her. She has 2 front shoes but none on the back. When you pick a horse’s hoof you always have to look out for the frog. The frog is an upside-down triangle in the middle of their hoof.

When we go on rides, we always wear helmets. Yesterday my brother had his first canter. He said it was very scary. When we got home my brother’s horse was acting a bit cheeky.

My pony’s name is Nollaig. He is a gelding. We have the same birthday. He is white but you call them grey. He is 11 hands 2 inches.

So far, I can trot, walk and a tiny bit of canter. I always groom him before I ride him.

He is on a diet of apples and grass. He has been very cheeky the past few days. Yesterday I did my very first canter, it was so scary. On that same day he was being cheeky. I didn’t want to canter. I pulled with all my might, but he did not stop.

There are multiple brushes you can use to groom a horse. There is a curry comb, dandy brush and a brush I do not remember right now. We do a triangle every day. I can’t wait to ride him today.
