National Tree Day brought to you by Samuel CW and Anna-Mae from 4th Class
October 1st is National Tree Day. This year’s tree is the Scot’s Pine. The Scot’s Pine was recently proved to be a native Irish Tree by Jennifer Roche, Samuel’s 1st cousin. In school we planted our very own Scot’s Pine. We even used our own compost from our Wormery!!! This was the 1st time using our own wormery compost, it was very exciting. The Scot’s Pine was believed to have died out in Ireland arround 2000 years ago.
Trees are very important because we breathe in oxygen and breathe out harmful carbon dioxide. Trees basically breath in carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen. We breath in this new oxygen so that is why trees are important.
Jennifer found out that the Scot’s Pine was a native Irish Tree by studying stumps of ancient trees found in bogs in Ireland. We picked Jennifer Roche because she is Samual and Alex’s cousin.
Children from Junior Infants along with Patricia, Clodagh and Anna-Mae and Samuel CW planted our Scots Pine in a pot. We will have to find a spot to plant it out when it gets stronger. Have a look at our pictures from planting our Scots Pine.
