Report on 6th’s visit to Rathfarnham Castle

In September 2016, 6th class went on a trip to Rathfarnham Castle. We first walked from the school down to Rathfarnham Village where we learned about Anne Devlin, the Court of Petty, and Rathfarnham Parish Church.
20160928_131127We then entered the grounds of the castle.

Did you know that Ely’s Arch used to be the entrance to Rathfarnham castle?

We had a lovely tour guide called Heather. She showed us all around the castle and we learned lots of different facts.

We went into many different rooms such as… the kitchen, the ballroom, the withdrawing room, the dining room, the gilt room, the ante room and  many others.

Many of the rooms had secret passages into another room, so if the castle was invaded the family who lived there could run through the walls going room to room.

The adults that went with 6th class were Katie, Clodagh, Mary G and Sinead (Ciara C’s Mommy)

And now from our other reporter Cara on 6th’s visit to Rathfarnham Castle

In September of 2016 sixth class went to Rathfarnham Castle accompanied by Katie,   , Mary G and Sinead (Ciara’s20160928_133424 Mommy) for a tour.

We first walked to Rathfarnham Village where we found out about Anne Devlin, the Court of Petty, Ely’s Arch and Rathfarnham Church of Ireland Parish Church.

We then entered the grounds of the castle where we met our tour guide named Heather.

When we wal20160928_134210ked into the Castle the first room we saw was what used to be the kitchen, all that was left was a hole in the wall where the stove would be.

Heather then gave us a full tour of the castle, she showed us the ball room, the withdrawing room, the grand entrance hall, inside a tower and several other rooms full of Antique furniture and paintings.

When the tour was over we went to Rathfarnham playground and stayed there until it was time to leave.

Sixth class then walked back to school and were collected.

Did you know: the Loftus family were granted the grounds of the castle in the 1580’s but the Castle was built around 1583!
