Let’s Make Some Ecobricks!

In an effort to reduce the amount of plastic waste in our environment, the Student Council are excited to be introducing an Ecobrick project to the RETNS community.

An Ecobrick is a building block made entirely from non-recyclable plastic. It’s created by filling a plastic bottle with clean, dry plastic until it’s packed tightly and can be used as a building block. Ecobricks can be used in all sorts of sustainable building projects, which makes them a great way to dispose of plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill, and potentially, the ocean.

The following links provide information on what Ecobricks are, how to make them and what they are used for:

We have a couple of bricks already underway in school, using the plastic wrapping that comes from the daily delivery of sandwiches, fruit and milk. As always, our aim is to reduce the amount of single-use plastic that we consume, but this is a great project to reduce the amount of non-recyclable plastic that ends up in landfill.

It takes quite a while to fill each bottle properly so that the plastic inside becomes compact and quite firm, and reaches the recommended weight of 575g for a 1.75l bottle, or 600g for a 2l bottle.

What we do with the completed Ecobricks will depend on how many we get! The Seal Sanctuary and Reuzi both accept completed Ecobricks for ongoing projects that they run, but if we get enough we might be able to build a bench, flowerbed or wall somewhere on the school grounds!

Over the coming weeks there will be  information posters around the school about this project, but in the meantime Completed Ecobricks can be given to the Student Council through Katie in Junior Infants.
